In fact, only seven cities are currently listed on the company’s website as having locations coming soon. The nearest location to Springfield is in Loves Park, Illinois.
The grand opening of the store is only a week away. On Wednesday, August 18, at 8 a.m., the company will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony. During the ceremony, a number of local leaders will be in attendance. The city’s Mayor Ken McClure and General Manager Angela Bauer will cut the ribbon.
It’s a much needed alternative to the Sam’s Club
Costco and Sam’s Club are both wholesale retail chains. Both offer similar goods and services, and have similar return policies. However, they differ in price and product selection.
The main difference between the two is their membership pricing. A Costco membership costs $60. An Executive membership costs $120. These memberships include additional benefits on certain services.
While both stores stock similar products, Costco offers a wider variety of store-brand items and has more international locations. Plus, Costco has an extended warranty on purchases over a certain amount.
A member of Sam’s Club can take advantage of curbside pickup at no cost. In addition, Sam’s Club has a food court. It also offers pizza and frozen yogurt.

Costco, the fifth largest retailer in the world, is coming to Springfield. The store is set to open in fall 2021. In the spring, the city’s planning and zoning commission will consider a preliminary plat for the site.
A Costco representative told Biz 417 that the company had “only limited information” at this time. He also said the retailer cannot comment on locations opening in the next three months or more. However, the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce has confirmed that the corporation will open a retail store in the city.
City officials expect the new store to increase consumer spending in the area. They also hope the store will help stem the “leakage” of consumer spending from the area to other markets.
