The Best Gluten-Free Stops When You’re on the Road

If you’re gluten-free and and on a road trip, you know how difficult “eating” can sometimes be. The thing is, wheat is an easy, cheap additive, and therefore, it’s in almost everything.

And wheat isn’t the only grain with gluten, even sauces have gluten, and things made or cooked with things that have gluten, cannot be made or cooked next to or with gluten-free things without possible cross-contamination. It’s a gluten world!
But fear not, whether people are just more aware of their bodies these days, or a fad for some, gluten-free is more popular than ever. And this is great news for those of us who eat gluten-free.

There are more menu items at more places, including fast food, than ever before. Here are some of my favorites:

Taco Bell

steak-nachos
Yum. Taco Bell was my favorite fast food back in high school, and I may even say that it still is! There are a lot of options for gluten-free eats at Taco Bell and they have an exhaustive list on their website. Off the top of my head, the nachos and cheese and XL Steak Nachos are both gluten-free and delicious!

Chick Fil A

Truth be told, I have only eaten at Chick Fil A once, and it was before I was gluten-free. And it was delicious. But I keep Chick Fil A “in my back pocket” because not only do they have a gluten-free bun option, but they also have a dedicated fryer. This means that you can have fries. This is very exciting to gluten-free eaters because lots of places do not have separate fryers. So if you want a Chick Fil A sandwich and fries “just like everyone else,” you can do it all. Gluten free and yummy.

Chipotle

Chipotle has been through the ringer in the past years with breakouts, sicknesses, and outbreaks all over the place. But the thing is, this company is legit. (In my opinion.) They have always concentrated on healthy, sustainable foods, and quality meats.

I will always stand up for Chipotle and I really hope the company enjoys only success from here on out. Anyhow, to the food!

Chipotle is a burrito chain and before being gluten-free, my favorite order was a barbacoa burrito. My BFF took me to Chipotle for the first time ever and I still get the same thing I did with her that first visit, every single time. When I was there as a gluten-free eater, I got the barbacoa burrito bowl and I am happy to share it was just as delicious and just as fulfilling as the burrito is. Yum! (Tell your food preparer about being sensitive to gluten or if you have an allergy so that they can change gloves and do what they can to protect your food, and you, from gluten.)

Subway

Ok, so very few Subways have the gluten-free bread (bun) option, but that doesn’t mean you have to go without. In fact, there are a lot of things to eat from this popular chain. Last time I was there, I got the steak and cheese in a cup, rather than on bread, and a side of broccoli cheese soup. It was delicious and filled my Subway craving without filling my bod with heavy gluten bread. You can also make (almost) any sandwich into a salad, which creates virtually any option. Make sure to mention your sensitivity so the employees can change gloves and make any and all precautions to keep your meal gluten-free.

These four spots have yummy and filling gluten-free foods that you will eat and love. Also, make sure to take snacks with you on your road trip. This way, you can have several things you know you like, and you know you can eat on hand, so if you don’t find something you want on the menu (or just don’t want to eat out for that meal,) you will still have bites to enjoy.
