The sister to David Chang’s Momofuku, Milk Bar offers up some cult-favorite treats. The compost cookie is a cookie packed with al the favorites for a salty and sweet treat: pretzels, potato chips, coffee, oats, graham crackers, butterscotch and chocolate chips.

Then there’s crack pie, most likely got its name because it’s so addictive. The cake truffles are bite-sized bits of heaven.

5. Dominique Ansel Bakery

This bakery was put on the map with the infamous cronut craze the city was taken over by a few years ago. In fact, landing your hands on one of these precious pieces of pasty was quite the envious accomplishment.

Then there were the chocolate chip cookie shots filled with milk. The man behind the inventions, Dominique Ansel, was named the World’s Best Pastry Chef in 2017 by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards.

If you find yourself wandering around Soho, definitely stop in to see what all the fuss is about. You never know what he has up his sleeve, and you might be able to try out the next big thing in baking.

20 layers of paper-thin crêpes in between layers of pastry cream topped with a carmel glazy finish. It’s just the right amount of sweet and creamy. The signature cake is available in other flavors as well, such as green tea, lemon, coconut, and chocolate.

The bakery has 6 locations in New York, so you’ve got your pick of boutiques to sample your slice of deliciousness.

3. Two Little Red Hens

This teeny, tiny little bakery located on the Upper East Side has the ultimate Red Velvet cupcakes. Their Brooklyn Blackout and Peanut Fudge Swirl are also worth noting.

In 2012 New York Daily News named their cheesecake the best in New York. That’s a distinction worth testing out.

2. Four & Twenty Blackbirds

We’re talking pie here. This Brooklyn-bakery is run by sisters Melissa and Emily Elsen. Learning to bake pies from the grandmother, they initially started their business baking pies in their Brooklyn apartment.

Their pie flavors range from fruit, custard, and chocolate. You can order just a slice or a whole pie. I think after you’ve sampled one piece, you’ll want the whole pie.

1. Levain

Who has the best cookie in New York City? Levain. Baked fresh daily, the cookies, as dense and big as a baseball, come out oohey and gooey in the best possible way.

Walk by the bakery on a weekend, and you’ll see a line of people wrapped around the block waiting their turn in line to sample the cookie. Don’t believe how good these cookies are? The New York Times claims “they may be the largest, most divine chocolate chip cookies in Manhattan.”
