When you’re in a couple in real life, things can be tough. From getting along with each others friends, to compromising, to dealing with really heavy issues, it isn’t always easy.
People bash rom coms as cheesy, unreal, and a terrible standard to try to live up to, and this is true. You cannot watch rom coms, lifetime movies, and read romance novels and then expect your relationship to live up to those stories, because it never will.
But well these movies and love stories aren’t something you should strive to live up to, they are a great way to find closeness in your relationships, and to have those conversations you otherwise may never have. Let me tell you more.
All couples go through different situations within their relationship. No couple is the same and really, no one from the outside looking in can advise or help the couple through anything. It takes talking, understanding, compromise, and lots of love to keep everything good. And that’s where rom coms come in.
When you watch a rom com where a parent dies and the kids have to go through all their belongings and there is family stress and more, you can talk about, and “work through,” this within your couple, without having to actually go through it yourself. How awesome is that?
This goes for issues with friends, others deaths, family stuff, sibling fights, problems at work, and more. And if you make it further to getting engaged, getting married, having kids, broken engagements, thought and plan differences that become major issues, infertility, divorce, and financial issues, then there is just that much more in the movies for you.
Rom coms are good to watch because you see others going through stressors. This makes those situations relatable and understandable, and therefore interesting and important to watch, discuss, and understand.
The thing is, arguments and fights in real life oftentimes do not end in witty banter and copulation like in the movies. They sometimes end badly with hurt feelings, unresolved issues, and if you’re not careful, resentment. At the end of the day, I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t rather talk about other people’s problems then talking about their own. So this is perfect. You can watch rom coms and talk about the relationships and what happens within them and learn more about being in a couple and how to be in a couple, all from the movies!
Here are a couple great movies that are funny, relatable, and a good starting place for understanding more about being a couple.
Knocked Up
When Alison gets a promotion at work and goes out to celebrate with her sister, she meets Ben. They drink a lot, dance, and end up back at her place. She becomes pregnant and tells Ben. It takes a while to make it work but they are together by the end of the movie, and having a baby.
Losing Sarah Marshall
In an almost backwards way, this movie teaches you to be with someone who really cares about you. Sarah and Peter broke up after she tells him she has been with another man. Peter cries and ends up on a vacation where her and her new beau are staying. Peter gets over Sarah and falls for Rachel who by the end of the movie is back in the states and planning on seeing Peter regularly.
