If you haven’t heard of Porto’s, it is a family-run business with about 46 years of history under its belt. Betty Porto, Daughter of founder Rosa Porto, still helps run things day to day along with her siblings, following in the footsteps of her Cuban mother who baked under communist rule in Cuba in the 1960s.
Porto’s, a bakery, that is famous for both sweet and savory Cuban food. Their two greatest hits are their guava-and-cheese strudels and picadillo-filled potato balls.
These strudels are perfect: flaky, airy, fruity, and just the right amount of sweetness.
The potato balls, which are coated in panko and deep-fried, are pure comfort. They are filled with mashed potatoes, ground beef, peppers, onions, and spices. Pure deliciousness in every bite!
This bakery likes to keep to things simple and affordable.
A dozen guava-and-cheese strudels or a dozen potato balls are $16.99. That same price also gets you a dozen empanadas or a dozen meat pies or 15 cookies. Porto’s is where you can easily put together a $4 breakfast or a $6 lunch then treat yourself to a delicious but affordable dessert.

History of Porto’s
Rosa was born on the island of Cuba! Where she grew up surrounded by the smell of sweet creations made from recipes brought by her mother. Many years later, Rosa‘s life took an unexpected turn when her beloved Cuba suddenly fell victim to communism. The Porto family made the difficult decision to leave Cuba. Which caused Rosa Porto was being fired from her job and her husband being taken to a labor camp.
Out of a job, Rosa relied on her baking skills for work. She then sold cakes to her neighbors and friends to support her family. Meanwhile, she unknowingly began to build up a great reputation and a loyal customer base. Eventually, the Porto family was granted permission to emigrate to the United States where the next chapter of their family story began.
In 1976, Rosa opened her first official storefront, Porto’s Bakery on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park, California.
After founder Rosa Porto passed away in 2019, the Los Angeles Times published a piece that called Porto’s “the most beloved bakery in Los Angeles.”
Her three children and grandchildren work alongside a talented and dedicated team to carry on Porto’s tradition and Rosa’s legacy.
