Buying and eating amazing produce is best when it’s in season. You’ll get the best price for the best quality food. Win-win.
It’s finally Fall and I for one couldn’t be happier. And the produce of the Fall is some of my favorite. Fresh, juicy pears, sweet, tart, apples and savory sweet potatoes are only a few of my favorites, and here are some more.
Garlic and Shallots
In my honest opinion, there is nothing better than garlic. I put it in everything, I love it in everything, and I want it all the time. It’s flavor when raw is very strong, it’s even (spicy) hot. When roasted it becomes soft, almost sweet, and nutty.
And shallots are like part garlic and part onion. They are sweet yet flavorful and as a result of its flavors, shallots and garlic are delicious together.
Green Beans, Celery, Carrot, and Onion
Green beans are a great green vegetable in the Fall. They have a fresh flavor, and are delicious with a bit of butter, salt, and pepper. They have a great, bright green color, too.
Celery and carrots are good fresh and raw but also hearty enough to add to stews and soups. And onions go with everything, all the time. But in The Fall they are the cheapest and most flavorful. Get them at the end of summer and throughout the Fall for the best of the best.
Zucchini
Zucchinis are pretty cheap and are available all the time. Want to know the other perk about buying things when they’re in season? They’re also local, and therefore the most fresh they can be. Plus, you can use zucchini in muffins, with or as noodles, in side dishes, grilled, and even as zucchini boats. They’re versatile and full of water, so they’re super healthy, too.
Kale
For a powerhouse of nutrition, this superfood is ready to eat during the Fall. You can enjoy it in salad, on a burger, or on your taco. There are even some stew recipes that call for it. Although it’s green and lettuce like, Kale is resilient and strong, and will (mostly) keep its shape and texture.
Grapes and Cranberries
Green and purple, sweet and tart, grapes are delicious. Get them at their best in the early Fall.
And get some cranberries, too. There’s the classic and delicious cranberry sauce that’s so popular at Thanksgiving time and cranberries and apples make a Fall produce filled crisp that is too good.
Pumpkin, Pears, and Apples
Pumpkin is a flavor of the season, some would even call it the flavor of the season. The people love it. Me, not so much. But cooking with it (baked pie pumpkins) creates protein shakes, pumpkin cookies, and more. Add cinnamon, too, because it’s Fall and these flavors are meant to be.
Apples are my choice, if I had to choose between pumpkins and apples, for best Fall flavor. But then again, there are pears. And pear sauce is apple sauces sweeter and more unique sister. Pear crisp is a delightful dessert and pears pair well with pork. They are best in November.
Now that it’s the Fall, be sure to stock up on and enjoy the produce of the season. There is nothing better than warm, sunny Fall days and crisp, chilly Fall nights.
