Dating trends come and go (which is of course why they are called trends), and in 2019 we expect to see some changes from this past year. What we expect to see in the new year is a revival of some old-fashioned dating ideas and traditions, including finding new ways to meet a partner.
While dating apps have certainly helped many of us meet new people and find dates, heading into 2019, it feels as if many of us are shifting the focus away from the easy hookups that many dating apps offer us. Instead, we are looking for legitimate connections and new ways to meet potential romantic partners.
Alternative Ways to Meet People
When it comes to trying to meet new people without using an app, there are actually a number of viable options. Obviously these require in person interactions, but you may actually be surprised by how many ways your dating life could transform in 2019 by getting off of the apps.
Speed Dating – Speed dating is an excellent way to get an app-like feel in real life. Not only does it allow you to meet real people, but it is a lot like going on multiple mini-dates in a single night. And with dating trends seeing a shift away from the constant need to swipe left or right, speed dating might be the perfect solution for those of us with not much time on our hands, but who still want to find love.
Matchmakers – Another option for finding love in the new year is using a matchmaker. Instead of relying on an app or service like Match.com, an actual matchmaker might be the best way to get some much-needed help for your love life. Not only will they do a lot of the swiping for you, but they will also offer great advice to help you find what you want out of a partner.
A Wingman or WingWoman – Dating with the help of a wingman or wingwoman can actually be a great way to get outside help without relying on someone you don’t know or trust. Whether they do some of the dirty work on an app, or help you on a night on the town, having what amounts to a dating partner in your life can be just the thing to refresh your attempts at finding someone new.

Do What’s Right for You
This might seem obvious, but going into 2019 it is time to start doing what is right for you, rather than what you think might be expected. You want to live your best life and even when it comes to your dating life, the last thing you want to do is settle for something that makes you unhappy. Don’t let the desire to be in a relationship make you do things that don’t make you genuinely happy.
Move On
When we say move on, we mean from everything from your ex to a bad experience. It is time to let the past go and work towards a fresh start. Take a cue from Ariana Grande and bring on the “Thank U, Next.”
Our exes teach us about ourselves and what we want and don’t want in a relationship. Take what you learned from those experiences and move on. Forget the guy who ghosted you. Leave behind those breadcrumb leavers (you know those guys who try to keep you on the hook while they look for someone they think is better than you). It is time to move on from all of that and find some genuine happiness in 2019.
Be Kind
We shouldn’t even have to say this, but sadly it must be said. Remember to be kind. Kindness is free and when you are kind it spreads to all aspects of your life. Even in your dating life, it is important to be kind. Even if you aren’t interested in someone, be honest with them. Don’t ghost them. Don’t treat people in a way that would hurt you if it was done to you.
Think about your actions. Remember that honey catches more flies than vinegar, and put out into the world what you want to get back.
Dating in 2019 is going to be a lot more about getting back to our roots and keeping things simple. It’s about meeting people in a more traditional way, being true to who we are, and learning lessons that may seem obvious, but are always worth a refresher.
